Electricity Access Scale up receives Frw 20.3 billion financing boost

Government of Rwanda and the African Development Bank (AfDB) signed an additional financing agreement worth US$ 22.9 million (Approximately Frw 20.3 billion) for the Scale up Electricity Access Program (SEAP).
Dr.  Claudine Uwera, the State Minister in charge of Economic Planning signed on behalf of Government of Rwanda while Dr. Gabriel Negatu, AfDB’s Director General for East Africa represented the Bank.
The concessional loan brings the total financing to this project by AfDB to US$ 270 million which is the largest operation made by the Bank in Rwanda.
Speaking after the signing of the agreement, Dr. Uwera stated: “The additional funds will support Government of Rwanda to achieve the national target of ensuring all Rwandan households, health centers, schools and business enterprises are connected to adequate and reliable electricity by 2024,”.
The signing took place on the sidelines of the ongoing 2019 Annual meetings of the Boards of Governors of the African Development Bank Group in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, Where Minister Uwera heads the Rwandan Delegation. About 3000 participants including finance ministers, central bank governors, policy makers, civil society organizations, leaders of international organizations and captains of industry from the Bank Group’s 80 member states are expected to participate.
